Shopping in Viseu

From Old-Town Shops to Malls

Updated · 4 min read

Whatever kind of shopping you enjoy, Viseu has it covered. In the old town you can spend hours browsing small, authentic shops. A short walk further brings you to the familiar high-street names at Forum Viseu. And if that’s still not enough, take the car or a taxi to Palácio do Gelo, one of the largest shopping centres in Central Portugal.

The best part: you can easily combine all three in a single day.

Browsing the old town

The old town is the place to take your time. From the Rossio, narrow lanes with a medieval street plan climb towards the cathedral — and that’s where you’ll find many traditional shops: small family businesses, craft shops and specialists that have opened the same door for generations.

Rua Direita

Rua Direita is Viseu’s oldest shopping street, running right through the historic centre. Traditional shops sit between centuries-old façades. Don’t skip the side streets either, such as Rua Escura with its 16th-century houses.

Getting lost is part of the fun

The historic centre is small enough that you can’t really get lost, but big enough to keep surprising you. Put the map away and follow your nose: up an alley, across a little square, into a shop. Combine it with a coffee on a terrace or a visit to the Sé — our old town walking route will help.

Tip: many small shops in Portugal close for lunch and are often shut on Sundays. Plan your browsing for a weekday or a Saturday morning.

Forum Viseu: the high street, within walking distance

Fancy the familiar names after the old town — a Zara, say? Walk on to Forum Viseu. This covered shopping centre is within walking distance of the centre and has a mix of international fashion chains, Portuguese brands and places to eat.

Forum Viseu is ideal when you want to escape the sun or the rain, or when you’re looking for something specific.

Palácio do Gelo Shopping: big shopping just outside town

Still not done? Take the car or a taxi to Palácio do Gelo Shopping, a few kilometres outside the centre. It’s one of the largest shopping centres in the region:

  • More than 150 shops from Portuguese and international brands, over seven floors
  • A Primark since 2025
  • Around 30 restaurants and food outlets
  • Cinema, bowling and an ice rink — hence the name: palácio do gelo means “ice palace”

That makes it a good option for a rainy day too, or if you’re travelling with children.

Getting there: a few minutes by car from the centre, with a large car park. A taxi from the Rossio is an affordable alternative if you’d rather leave the car.

Website: palaciodogelo.pt — with all shops, restaurants, activities and opening hours.

A shopping day in Viseu

The easiest way to combine it all:

  1. Morning: browse the old town and Rua Direita while the small shops are open
  2. Lunch: in the upper town or around the Rossio — see our tips in the Viseu travel guide
  3. Afternoon: walk on to Forum Viseu for the high-street chains
  4. Late afternoon or evening: car or taxi to Palácio do Gelo, perhaps combined with dinner or a film

Are shops in Viseu open on Sundays?

The shopping centres generally open on Sundays too. Many small, traditional shops in the old town are closed on Sundays and often at lunchtime. Check current opening hours on the websites of Forum Viseu or Palácio do Gelo, or with the shop itself.

Can I go shopping in Viseu when the weather is bad?

Yes. Both Forum Viseu and Palácio do Gelo are covered. Palácio do Gelo also has a cinema, bowling and an ice rink, making it a good rainy-day outing.

What should I take home from Viseu?

A bottle (or a case) of Dão wine is the classic souvenir — read more in our Dão wine region guide. Local crafts and azulejo-style ceramics also travel well. If you’re flying back to the UK, check the current rules for bringing food such as cheese back from the EU.
