Viseu has no airport, no international rail service and no direct coach from the UK. That sounds like a hurdle — and it is, a little. But it is also exactly why Viseu isn’t overrun with tour groups: getting there takes a small effort, which filters for the people who think it’s worth it.
This guide explains, step by step, the quickest and cheapest ways to get there from the UK.
At a glance: your options
| Route | Time to Viseu after landing | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fly to Porto + hire car | 1h45 | Shortest overall journey | Need to drive on the right |
| Fly to Lisbon + hire car | 2h45 | More flights, sometimes cheaper | Longer drive |
| Fly to Porto + coach | 2h30 | No car needed | Less flexible |
| Fly to Lisbon + coach | 4h+ | Car-free alternative | Few direct services |
| Ferry to Spain + own car | 6–7h from Santander | Bring your own car | Only worth it for longer stays |
Route 1: Porto Airport + car (recommended)
For most UK travellers, Porto Francisco Sá Carneiro (OPO) is the most practical gateway. It is the closest airport to Viseu (130 km) and is well served from the UK.
Direct flights from the UK to Porto
London (check current schedules when booking):
- Stansted — Ryanair
- Gatwick — easyJet, British Airways, TAP Air Portugal
- Luton — easyJet
- Heathrow — TAP Air Portugal
Regional airports (some routes are seasonal):
- Manchester — Ryanair, Jet2
- Birmingham — Ryanair, Jet2 (seasonal)
- Bristol — easyJet
- Liverpool — Ryanair
- Belfast — Ryanair (seasonal)
From Scotland there is not always a direct service; connecting via London or flying to Lisbon are the usual alternatives. Flight time from London is around 2 hours 15 minutes.
Travel tip: book return flights at least 6–8 weeks ahead for the best fares. Porto has become much more popular in recent years, and last-minute prices can rise sharply, especially in summer and school holidays.
Hiring a car at Porto
After landing you can drive straight from the airport towards Viseu. All the major rental companies have desks at Porto Airport.
Drive time Porto Airport → Viseu centre: about 1 hour 30–45 minutes via the A41 → A1 → A25
Route: from the airport take the A41 to the A1 towards Lisbon → at Albergaria-a-Velha take the A25 towards Viseu. The A25 climbs through the green hills of the Vouga valley up to the Viseu plateau.

Driving in Portugal: what’s different from the UK
- Drive on the right, overtake on the left. Take it slowly on the first roundabouts — they go anticlockwise, and traffic on the roundabout has priority.
- Your UK photocard licence is generally all you need to hire and drive a car in Portugal; check your rental company’s conditions, and bring your passport and a credit card in the driver’s name.
- Speed limits: 120 km/h on motorways, 90–100 km/h outside built-up areas, 50 km/h in towns. Signs are in km/h, not mph.
- Drink-driving limit: 0.5 g/l — lower than in England, Wales and Northern Ireland (0.8 g/l), the same as Scotland. In practice: don’t drink and drive.
- Tolls: you pay tolls on the A41 and A1 around Porto (partly electronic, partly at toll booths). The A25 to Viseu has been toll-free since 2025. Rental cars usually have a Via Verde transponder or the company bills you afterwards — ask at the desk.
- Excess insurance: rental firms often sell expensive excess cover at the desk. Standalone excess insurance bought before you travel is usually much cheaper.
Route 2: Lisbon Airport + car
Lisbon Humberto Delgado (LIS) is Portugal’s largest airport, with more flights from the UK (including from Scotland) and sometimes lower fares. The longer drive to Viseu partly cancels out that advantage.
Drive time Lisbon Airport → Viseu centre: about 2 hours 45 minutes–3 hours via the A1 → A25
Route: A1 towards Porto → at Albergaria-a-Velha take the A25 to Viseu. Alternatively, take the A1 to Coimbra and then the IP3 to Viseu.
Scenic detour: the A23 (Via da Beira) via Castelo Branco and Guarda, through the foothills of the Serra da Estrela, then the A25 to Viseu. A little longer, but toll-free since 2025 and beautiful. Allow 3.5 hours or more.
When Lisbon is the better choice:
- If you combine the trip with a stay in Lisbon (two days in the city, then drive to Viseu)
- If flights to Lisbon are significantly cheaper, or there’s no direct flight to Porto from your airport
- If you’d like to drive the scenic, toll-free A23 past the Serra da Estrela
Route 3: Coach from Porto
Rede Expressos runs several coaches a day between Porto (Campanhã station or the central coach terminal) and Viseu (Rodoviária de Viseu, just outside the centre).
Journey time: about 2 hours 15 minutes Frequency: on average 5–8 departures a day in each direction Price: about €12–16 per person one way (check current fares on the Rede Expressos website)
From Porto Airport to Campanhã:
- Metro line E (violet) runs directly from the airport to Campanhã: about 35 minutes, around €2
- The coach terminal is within walking distance of Campanhã
Downside: Viseu has no city bus linking the coach station with the historic centre. Take a taxi or Uber from the terminal (about €5–8).
Route 4: Train
There is no direct train to Viseu any more — the line closed in the 1980s. The nearest stations are:
- Mangualde (25 km from Viseu) — on the Beira Alta line (Porto–Guarda–Spain)
- Santa Comba Dão (30 km from Viseu)
Train to Mangualde plus a taxi to Viseu (about €25) is possible but roundabout — only worth it if you specifically want to ride the scenic Beira Alta line.
From London by train? It can be done: Eurostar to Paris, TGV to the Spanish border, then onward via Spain into Portugal. Count on at least two days with an overnight stop. A lovely adventure for rail enthusiasts, not a practical option for most.
Route 5: Ferry to Spain + your own car
For stays of two weeks or longer, taking your own car can make sense — and from the UK there’s a convenient way to skip France altogether.
Ferry: Brittany Ferries sails from Portsmouth (and on some sailings Plymouth) to Santander or Bilbao in northern Spain. The crossing takes roughly a day, with a cabin overnight.
Drive Santander → Viseu: about 600 km, 6–7 hours via Burgos or Valladolid and Salamanca, entering Portugal near Vilar Formoso and joining the A25 to Viseu.
Pros of your own car:
- Maximum flexibility for quintas, the Serra da Estrela and the surrounding villages
- No car hire costs in Portugal
- Room for luggage — and for cases of wine on the way home
Cons:
- Ferry fares are considerable, especially in summer
- Your car must be legally equipped for driving abroad (UK sticker, headlamp beam adjustment, insurance cover — check before you go)
- Tolls on some Spanish motorways — though the A25 from the Spanish border to Viseu has been toll-free since 2025
- Parking in Viseu’s historic centre means using a car park; street parking is limited
Getting around Viseu
Viseu has no metro or tram. In town you get around:
On foot: the historic centre is entirely walkable. Everything from the Sé to the Rossio is within 15 minutes. The upper town has steep streets — allow time.
Taxi/Uber: both available. Uber works well in Viseu. Trips within town: €4–8. To Porto Airport: about €80–110 (daytime, weekdays).
Hire car for day trips: essential for the Dão wine route and the Serra da Estrela. Hire a car at the airport on arrival or from a local agency in Viseu.
Frequently asked questions about getting to Viseu
What is the cheapest way to get from the UK to Viseu?
Usually a budget flight to Porto (Ryanair or easyJet) plus a hire car. Booked early, flight and car for a week typically come to around £150–250 per person, depending on your departure airport and season. Compare a few departure airports — prices can vary a lot.
Which UK airports have direct flights to Porto?
London Stansted, Gatwick, Luton and Heathrow have direct flights, as do several regional airports including Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Liverpool (some seasonal). Airlines and routes change regularly, so always check current schedules when booking.
Do I need anything special to enter Portugal from the UK?
UK visitors don’t need a visa for short holidays, but your passport must meet Schengen rules: issued less than 10 years before the date you arrive and valid for at least 3 months after the date you plan to leave. Since the introduction of the EU Entry/Exit System you may also be asked to register fingerprints and a photo at the border. Check the latest on GOV.UK’s Portugal travel advice before you go.
Is driving from Porto Airport to Viseu difficult?
No. It’s motorway almost all the way, and the A25 leads straight to Viseu. Google Maps and Waze both work well in Portugal. The biggest adjustment for UK drivers is driving on the right — take it easy on the first roundabouts. You pay tolls on the A41 and A1 around Porto; the A25 has been toll-free since 2025. The rental company explains how tolls are charged.
Does Viseu have good parking?
Yes. There’s an underground car park beneath Praça do Município, about €1.50 an hour and within walking distance of all the sights. For longer stays there are cheaper options outside the centre, and hotels outside the historic centre usually have their own parking.
How do I book the coach from Porto to Viseu?
On the Rede Expressos website (rede-expressos.pt). You can book online with an international credit card and show the ticket on your phone. Departures in Porto are from Campanhã station or the central coach terminal.
Will my phone work in Portugal?
Yes, but whether roaming is free depends on your UK network — several providers now charge a daily fee for EU roaming. Check your plan before you go, or buy a local or eSIM data plan.
